This is the thing we imagined together. And now it exists. Most people who wear custom jewelry cannot fully describe how it was made. They know it involved their input, and they know it looks unlike anything in a store. What they may not realize is how deliberate and transparent the process is at every stage - and how much of it involves them. Stage 1: The Consultation Every custom piece begins not with a design, but with a conversation. Before anything is drawn or priced, we spend time understanding who this is for, what the occasion is, and what style the wearer gravitates toward - architectural and modern, romantic and vintage-inspired, minimal and understated, bold and sculptural. These questions shape everything that follows. A piece designed for daily wear by someone physically active looks very different from an heirloom-quality statement piece meant for special occasions. Understanding the context is not a formality - it is the foundation. Stage 2: Stone Selection If the piece involves a gemstone - and most do - we select the stone before the design is finalized. This is the approach of a trained gemologist rather than a retailer: the stone is the heart of the piece, and the setting should be built around it, not the other way around. We evaluate loose stones under proper gemological conditions, assess their quality characteristics in person, and present options that match the client's priorities and budget. Once a stone is selected, its precise dimensions inform every subsequent design decision. Stage 3: Design and 3D Rendering With the stone chosen and the vision established, design begins. Using CAD/CAM technology, we develop a detailed 3D model of the piece - showing every curve, every prong, every proportion in precise digital form. The 3D rendering is presented to the client before any physical work begins. This is your opportunity to see the piece, evaluate it from every angle, request adjustments, and confirm that what is on screen matches what you imagined. Changes at this stage are straightforward. That discovery is the point." - Melissa Gann Stage 4: The Wax Model Once the digital design is approved, a physical wax model is produced - an exact replica of the finished piece in a material that allows you to hold it, try it on, and evaluate the proportions in a way that no screen can replicate. Wax models reveal things that renderings sometimes miss: how the piece sits on the finger, whether the proportions feel right at scale, how the weight distributes. This stage exists specifically to give you a final confirmation before anything permanent occurs. Stage 5: Casting With the wax model approved, the piece is cast. The wax model is encased in a material called investment, which is heated until the wax burns away, leaving a precise negative mould. Molten metal - gold, platinum, or another alloy - is poured into the mould, filling every detail of the original design. Stage 6: Stone Setting Setting stones by hand is one of the most skilled elements of the entire process. Each stone must be positioned precisely, secured to withstand the rigours of daily wear, and oriented to maximise its optical performance - all without damaging the stone or disrupting the metalwork around it. Stage 7: Finishing and Polish The final stage transforms a technically complete piece into something beautiful. Filing, sanding, and polishing remove any surface irregularities from casting and setting. The finished piece is inspected under magnification to confirm that every stone is secure, every surface is flawless, and every detail matches the original design. Only then is it presented to the client. From the first conversation to that final moment of recognition, a custom piece typically takes six to eight weeks.
